How 2 handle kids hu were picky eaters? & how 2 prevent having picky eater kids?  email this discussion to a friend?

I had seen parents who have ids who were not picky eaters, They eat whats on the table without complaining. I dont want to have that headache once i became a dad. I dont want to have kids who whines, cries about how much they hate the food. I have a Nephew who wants to eat nothing but processed meat, he doesn't like vegetables, fresh meat that was cooked as a decent meal and seafood. I also have a nephew who wants to eat nothing but dried anchovies and the most disturbing will be my niece who became a vegan at age of 5, Her parents didn't raised her to be vegan but because the girl was so afraid to be fat and ugly, I think television influenced her.

what should I do so my kids wont be like my nephews and niece?

oops one more addition, I have a niece who was not a picky eater but she was a slow eater, it takes her 3 hours before she finish any meal.

To raise less picky eaters make them start trying new foods at a young age. If you allow them to eat just one type of food until they are 3 or 4 and then expect them to change it will not happen. Also ask them to try different things; but don't expect them to like everything they try. When my boys were younger they said they did not like everything and my response would be that they had to try at least 1 spoonful. If they ate that spoonful and still did not like it I would not make them eat it again. The amazing thing is that they found out that they liked much more then they thought they did and that I am actually a good cook. LOL

My girls had their favorite foods for sure, but they knew that they had to eat one or two bites of what I put on their plates. They complained once in awhile-but kids do. I made them sit until their plates were empty. They both like a lot of different foods today. One likes sushi and the other loves Mexican. The one thing you want to do is be consistent and have your spouse on board with you decide. Good luck!

i was a picky eater when i was a kid and the thing is i didn't eat much at all. i probably would had eaten less if i didn't eat what i craved of what little food i did. if picky eaters are like that i would say let them be picky and eat specfic foods as they don't eat much anyway. its better for them to eat something at the least. i'm not a picky eater now.

routine and strictness!! My son will eat what he is given even if he doesnt want that for dinner, Hes 5 now and rarely ever complains about what he is given.
When he was younger and hed whine and have a tantrum because he didnt want a particular food, Id put it on the table and if he didnt eat it, it would be taken away and he would have to wait till the next meal to be fed.
Kids wont starve themselves and they sharp realise they wont get their own way if your strict with them.
When children are picky eaters its the parents fault always as untill they are old enough to look after themselves how can they decide whats best to eat?
Parents who mullie cuddle around their kids at dinner time just cause themselves extra greif for the future.
And as for slow eating its the same sort of structure you give the child a time limit to eat the dinner in and if its not eaten you take the dinner away till next meal time.
I always make a nice pudding for afters and it acts as an accentive when hes mucking around, we always let him watch tv at dinner time aswell but if he acts up or is taking to long due to the tv being on it gets turned off untill he has finished what he started.
Like i say the best way to prevent a picky eater is to start at a young age with all different foods and always remember your the boss, if kids had it their way all the time theyd eat nothing but sweets and chocolate.

There are things you can try to make your children more excpeting of new foods. Best advice is trying a variety of new foods early and also show by example if you are eating it and its normal part of every meal then your children more likely to try it. There are some situations when a child will not try new foods or certain types of foods. One such situation is in the case of children who are senory defensive. Some children can not stand the texture of certain foods...like they wont eat cooked veggies but they love raw veggies this is an obvious texture sensitive problem. So if you do have problems getting a child to eat a food cooked a certain way try an alternate for of serving its........ cooked verses raw or cold verses hot. I have had to get pretty creative when cooking for my autistic children do to sensory integration problems.

Oh, I have trouble with my 7-year old kid as well. I don't know what to do. If my budget can stretch a bit then I try to buy food that she like. Otherwise, she'll starve to death.

im a full time dad albertwhisker. its really hard for them not only to eat good foods but to eat fast as well. just to share with you what i've read about this: with the eating fast thing, you cant really force the kids to eat fast coz there's always interruptions around that they would stay out of focus from time to time. even a simple wind blow will make their head turn from left to right very often. you really have to be patient to watch them and remind them of their food. with the eating vegetable thing, you must show them that you yourself eat those foods. just a tip, before you even put it into your mouth, tell them that its a delicious and healthy food. it will help them convince more. my kids used to not mind those veggies around but now, im happy to tell that they would eat whatever i put on their plates. it even amazed me coz at school, most of the time, they're the only one answering whenever the teacher shows a picture a vegetable and ask what it is, while other pupils are staring and wondering what in the hell is it.happy

hi albertwhisker. Although I'm not yet a mom, my answer will only be based to what I know. For me, kids especially toddlers are really picky eaters. They tend to eat everyday their favorite foods. It is better to introduce new food everyday ofcourse that seems to be deliscious in their eyes. Kids love colorful stuffs and it is better to add up veggies one step at a time. Just correct me if I'm wrong?

I myself am a picky eater at the age of 22. I hate being picky and it definately is not because I will not try things. I try anything I can any chance I can because I want to like so many different things. It's so hard to be at a restaurant and see so many things that look good but do not taste good. The most important thing to remember is not to force your child to eat foods, this will give them a complex and they will not eat the foods simply because the associate them with negative feelings. Keep putting the foods in front of them at an early age and they will eat them. I had options when I was a child and I ate what I liked but I always wanted to try something new. Though I did not, and still do not, like many things, I am always trying to find something new to eat. If your child just simply cannot like certain foods there is nothing you can do but always give them options and they will always be willing to try new things without you even asking.
