Dammit!!! I'm British!!! |
| |
| Well, I go and post a discussion making light of the language differences between American and British users here...and then over the weekend, I receive an email from my Dad tracing our family history...and I am British!!! Looks as though it happened like this: WILLIAM RATCLIFF was born June 19, 1789 in Sussex, England, and died November 09, 1868 in Homestead Farm, Olney, Richland County, Illinois. He married MARY ANN MILLER October 13, 1814 in St. John The Baptist Parish Church, Margate, England, daughter of STEPHEN MILLER and ANN MAXTED. She was born July 28, 1793 in Coleswood, Isle of Thanet, Kent, England, and died December 10, 1869 in Homestead Farm, Olney, Richland County, Illinois. More About WILLIAM RATCLIFF: Burial: Abt. November 11, 1868, Ebenezer Ch., Cem., Richland Co., IL Immigration: 1829, To the United States, perhaps on the Brig Mount Vernon Occupation: Plasterer/Planter/Farmer Residence: Bet. 1789 - 1830, Petham, Kent, England Residence1: Bet. 1830 - 1832, Buffalo, New York Residence2: Bet. 1832 - 1838, Ganges, Richland, Ohio Residence3: Aft. 1838, Olney, Richland County, Illinois So it appears my genes entered America around 1830...but I am still not sure at what point my shirt and shoes arrived... So now I am in a quandary here; should I continue to speak my butchered beloved Americanized English, or should I celebrate the history of my roots and begin to use the proper British terms for things? Also...are any of y'all over there on the other side of the pond related to me? | | Ratcliff Coat Of Arms | | | | |

| | Being born in England myself and spending most of my life in the US. Go ahead and use your americanized english. We all do. I live in the south and have quite a southern accent. My mother on the other hand still holds onto her british accent. I guess since she talks to her family at least once a week. Just make sure if you start to use proper english, you know what the translations mean in our americanized version. Would not want you saying the wrong thing to someone and getting in trouble. | | | | | | |

| | By that logic, I should start writing in 1/4 Russian or Yiddish, 1/4 Polish, 1/8 proper British (or maybe that ancestor had some dreadful dialect) and all the rest German. And Dawn don't know no Polish, :-( But isn't genealogy cool? I've gotten a bunch of information on my mom's relatives on one side. They come from a part of Germany this is now Poland. And I've been able to go online and see what some of those places look like now. On my Dad's side, my Aunt has a lot of information, but she hasn't gotten around to sharing it yet... | | | | | | |

| | That is a Karmic bite, if you believe in Karma. My mom spent a lot of years looking down on one particular racial heritage, and how this and that, and "green" and "ignorant" and "abusive" they were as a race. Actually come to think of it, a couple of ethnic heritages. She knew that we were heavily of the one race, but not the other, on my dad's side. WELL my dad handed me a letter that was written in my great great grandfather's hand telling his heritage, and guess what, we are that other race as well. I join you in my relationship to the British Isles. In fact, I now have documentation that I am related to all parts of Great Britain, except the Cornishmen. By the way, what I have always read about this particular group of people is that they are musical, artistic, poetic and mystic. I am proud to find that I am Welsh as well as Scots, Irish, English, German, French, Swedish, Black Dutch, and Native American (Choctaw) and Jewish. I think I join Irish Friendly in being all mixed up. | | | | | | |

| | I'm not related to you, but I went to school with a couple of Ratcliff brothers in grades 5 and 6. They had been expelled from their previous school for trouble making. Mike and Ross. Mike was kinda hot, in that preteen way... | | | | | | |
