| | I have a problem with Windows 2000 Pro. I saw your topic and thought maybe you'd have an idea. I have no icons showing on the desktop, but I do have the taskbar (also no menu when I right click the desktop). I can access programs from the start menu, but I can't access the control panel. It gives me the message; "cannot find the file '(null)' (or one of it's components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available." The computer will hang for a few seconds then give this message; "Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied". I use Firefox, so I can still access the internet. I tried to use IE6 to do an online spyware scan with X-Cleaner. IE hangs and never fully loads, I have to go through task manager to shut it down. I do have Windows Defender and AVG Antivirus and I've never had problems with spyware or viruses. I can see my desktop icons and access the control panel when I start in safe mode. I've also tried running my 2000 cd and going through the repair option. It didn't help. Looks to me like it's a problem with explorer, but I don't know. If you have any thoughts I would greatly appreciate it. If all else fails, I'm going to have to wipe the thing and start over. That's my last resort. :P | | | | | | |

| | I am not familiar with 200 pro but try this. On the task bar at the bottom do a right click and see if you and get into the properties. If you can switch to the classic mode. Not sure this will hep but maybe. Otherwise I would recomend you reinstall with the cd but don't do a format. This way you dont lose your personal files. Hope this helps. | | | |

| | Thanks for replying. It's driving me crazy..lol. I can't right click on the task bar either, I get the second message I posted above. I also see now that nothing in my start menu is working except for 'Programs' and 'Run'. I can't even shut it down from the start menu. I have to use 'ctrl, alt, del' choose shut down from there. It will hang for a few seconds and tell me explore.exe is not responding. Right now I'm logging in through the Admin profile (which is working well). Obviously the profile I use is corrupt. I was thinking maybe create a new profile and swap the folder of the corrupt profile to see what happens when I restart it. Thanks for the advice, if this doesn't work I probably will reinstall as you said. I've already saved most of the important things just incase of the worst. :) | | | |

| | I would also concider getting a virus software sound like you may have gotten something.....You may have to do the format in order to get rid of it if you do.. Good luck. Kevin | | | |

| | There are two steps may help you. 1. If you think it's a virus activity then you should run a Bootable Antivirus Programme for a better results. If it does not detects any harm then consider the second case. 2.In safe mode : Right Click on Desktop-chossed property-choose DeskTop Tab from the window. Click on Customize & check if icon status are enabled or disable there. You can able to view your desktop items (if it's disable) only if you can do the right click at the blank area of the desktop or having access to control pannel. As you are saying that you can access your icons in safe mode it indicates that windows have some driver problems with it. Try to Repair Windows properly & install Display Driver again & if it does not work please let me know..If you want i can access your desktop remotely can do the trouble shooting for absolutely free. | | | |

| | Thank you both:) I really don't think the problem is from a virus or spyware. I do have software installed to protect from those, I scan everything I download and I also run online scans once a week as an extra precaution. The trouble began after a power outage. I have 2 profiles on the computer, the main 'Administrator' profile and the profile I use with administrator rights. I always try to tell people to not use the Admin profile incase something like this happens, but it's the first time I've had to take my own advice. I think I have the problem, for the most part, solved. I went through the 'Admin' profile, created a new profile with administrator rights and transferred my important folders (documents, programs etc.) to the new profile. Rebooted the computer into the new profile to make sure I didn't bring the problem with me. All of my important things are there; files, bookmarks and even my icons are back on the new desktop. Now I'm scanning everything I transferred just to be safe. Once I know I have everything I need from the old profile, I'll just delete it and use the new one I created. I know I could've saved alot of time by reinstalling or even creating a new profile to begin with, but I wanted to know what caused the original problem....and see if there was a way to fix it. My natural curiosity I guess:) I do appreciate your help, sometimes it nice to have objective opinions and maybe find something I'm missing. I don't know if my solution would work the same with corrupt profiles on other Windows OS's, but I tried to be detailed incase someone else runs into the same problem. Thank you again..both of you.:) | | | |
