Service Dogs - Thoughts? |
| |
| I think I should get a service dog - a Psychiatric Service Dog specially trained for Schizotypal-Autism and PTSD. Schizotypal-Autism btw - is Asperger's on the farthest end of the bell curve - it's one of the rarest forms of Autism and is thought to be a person with both Asperger's and Schizophrenia at the same time. They have special service dogs trained for Schizotypal-Autism PTSD Agoraphobics. Weird. There must be other Schizotypal-Autism PTSD Agoraphobics out there, otherwise there would... | | view full article | | | |

| I don't know where you live, but here in Canada Service dogs can be provided at no cost to the people who get them, if they cannot afford to pay for them. Contact the people who train service dogs(the National Schools if none are local) I am sure you will find someone who can help you. There is one group who were on the News last night who help people do fund raising for a dog if they can't afford to pay the full cost. If you search, I am sure you can find one. By the way, I am a Breeder and my Purebred Collies sell for under $1000, there are other purebreds that sell for less around here all the time. Just keep looking.

| I think service dogs do some really wonderful work for people with all kinds of medical conditions. Recently I read about a dog that wakes its owner that has sleep apnea whenever she stops breathing...that dog has saved its owner's life countless times! It's a shame that cost is a factor in getting service animals to the people that need them, but I've heard of charities and other initiatives that exist to help out. I suppose your ability to take advantage of those services depends on where you live...rural Maine, unfortunately, may be off these organization's radar screens.

| I did not know that they trained service dogs for this type of condition. This is a very informational article(at least for me lol.) You may try placing ads on classifieds or pet sites. Just advertise what you need the dog for and hopefully someone will have an unwanted dog that they would give you. You could look around the internet people are always giving dogs away for free. And trust me mixes are very trainable wonderful pets too.
